Origins

The cocktail shaker has been a staple of the cocktail bar for as long as cocktails have been around. There are two main types of cocktail shaker. A traditional cocktail shaker has a built-in strainer for straining the ice that is generally used with all shaken cocktails. The second type is called a Boston shaker, and it requires a separate strainer (called a hawthorne strainer). Most cocktail shakers are made of metal, but a surprisingly large number of plastic cocktail shakers have started to appear on the market.

With many plastic cocktail shakers made today, they tend to be insulated. This means that the drink inside stays cold (ie no heat transfer from your hands) and no heat is lost to the outside to form condensation. This means no embarrassing drops !

One last advantage is that a plastic cocktail shaker can be any number of colours to either match the decor of your cocktail bar, or simply to match a theme of your party. Imagine what your guests will think of cocktails on St. Patricks day coming from a green plastic cocktail shaker? Although metals can be coloured, this means a huge increase in cost for the shaker.
